Trinh Tuan : Trinh Tuan
Trinh (family name; pronounced "Cheen") Tuan (given name) was born in 1961 in Hanoi and graduated from the Hanoi Industrial Fine Arts College in 1985. He received his M.A. at Hanoi Fine Arts Institute in 2000. He is currently a Professor at Hanoi Industrial Fine Arts College.

Considered by many to be the premiere lacquer artist in Vietnam, his works depict a plethora of emotions. Some pieces evoke thoughts of caring, compassion and/or concern for loved ones; others depict lonely, contemplative or introspective individuals while yet others depict men and women struggling with strife, reconciliation, forgiveness, memories and loss. All of his works give the viewer an opportunity to reflect.

Tuan's foreign exhibitions have included Japan, China, Germany, Singapore, Denmark, France, Argentina, Laos, Australia, USA, Thailand, Israel, Netherlands, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Malaysia. Thanks to everyone who joined us at the Tokyo American Club January 11 - Feb 7, 2010 for Trinh Tuans solo exhibition entitled "Emotions" featuring a very significant collection of his works.

Tuan's paintings are found, among others, in the collections of the Crown Prince of Norway and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. He represented Vietnam in OpenAsia 2004 in Venice, Italy.

Vu Cong Dien : Vu Cong Dien
Vu Cong Dien was born in 1975 and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 2005. He has only been on the professional scene for a few years yet his works are already in high demand in Europe, Australia, the US and Japan. Dien brings a fresh approach to his landscapes often using color in unusual combinations. At other times, he uses mono and dichromatic color schemes to achieve a sense of tranquility and peace.

Dien's works were extremely well received at his exhibition in Dubai in late May and are quite difficult to come by since he takes time to paint with meticulous attention to detail. We feel privileged to have been the first gallery outside of Vietnam to feature his works and enjoyed introducing him in person to the Tokyo community in November 2008 when he was a featured artist at "Through Their Eyes" benefit exhibition at Shinsei Bank. His works are currently being carried in galleries in Singapore, London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Finland, Belgium and Hanoi.

Dao Hai Phong : Dao Hai Phong
Dao Hai Phong was born in 1965, the son of the well known artist Dao Duc. He studied at the Hanoi College of Film and Theater from 1982 to 1987 and won an award for his outstanding designs at the Vietnam Film Festival. His main medium is oil on canvas. Although he had painted as a hobby from the age of six, it was only after his graduation that Phong started to focus on developing his unique painting style.

Phong uses a bold palette to depict scenes reminiscent of his childhood and of life as he sees it. His paintings are full of detail but are usually devoid of people and characterized by a peaceful emptiness. An ethereal glow from a light source within a building or the shadows, reflections and mirror images seen in his compositions evoke moods and questions in the viewers mind. Phong’s emotions and genius are embedded in his brilliant pieces. “Painting brings me great pleasure and my works reflect both my optimism and melancholy. Each painting carries some of me with it; my joys, hopes and fears …”

Dao Hai Phong and Nguyen Thanh Binh were featured in "A Peaceful Place" exhibition which opened in Tokyo on November 21, 2009. Room to Read, the beneficiary of this exhibition, received 10,000 US dollars from Toriizaka Art and looks forward to continuing their work of building schools and libraries in Vietnam with the proceeds from the event.

Dao Hai Phong has exhibited widely in Vietnam and abroad. His work is collected by enthusiasts all over the world and is regarded as some of the finest among contemporary Vietnamese artists. All works featured by Toriizaka Art are chosen from his private collection and represent his absolute best.

Nguyen Minh Phuoc : Nguyen Minh Phuoc
Nguyen Minh Phuoc was born in Hanoi in 1973. He graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts Institute in 1997 and was awarded the Philip Morris Encouragement Prize at the Asean Art Awards that year.

His works have been exhibited on numerous occasions in Vietnam, Tokyo, China, and Hong Kong. He has also exhibited several times in the United States (receiving an honorable mention from the Vermont Studio Center) and most recently (October, 2008) completed a very successful exhibition in Germany.

Phuoc's works are often serene and ethereal. The monks, clad in traditional saffron robes, are portrayed in almost photo-realistic detail while the background is subtle and dreamlike.

Nguyen Thanh Binh : Nguyen Thanh Binh derives much of his inspiration for his paintings from Japanese Haiku poetry where a minimal number of words portray great meaning. Many people look at Binh’s paintings and see a kind of poetic simplicity and on the surface they may be correct. However, Binh has endured significant trials of both mind and body and his art represents a place of refuge which is deeply influenced by his experiences. “I use oils and canvas originated in the west and combine them with my eastern eyes, hands and mind to create my paintings. My pieces may appear to be simple but my mind is brimming with memories, feelings and passion and each of them quietly resonates from my soul."

Nguyen Thanh Binh is world renowned and his name and works are some of the most recognized and collected in contemporary Vietnamese art. He has exhibited widely in Vietnam and abroad. His work is collected by enthusiasts all over the world and is regarded as some of the finest among contemporary Vietnamese artists. All works featured by Toriizaka Art are chosen directly from him and represent his absolute best.

Le Minh Duc : Le Minh Duc
Le Minh Duc was born in 1981 and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 2005. Duc sees beauty in the simple scenes that surround him in his daily life - the smallest alley, a dilapidated rowboat, laundry hanging in a garden, the sunset over a roof-top. His use of light and dark hues gives each painting a sense of great depth and perspective.

Although Duc paints images from his native Vietnam, they remind many of typical village scenes in Europe and Latin America. Duc has been recognized as a significant young talent to watch and his paintings are being rapidly collected by enthusiasts intrigued with his realistic style. He recently completed solo exhibitions in Dubai and Singapore and was featured at the highly acclaimed "Through Their Eyes" exhibition in Nov. 2008 in Tokyo and at an exhibition in Hong Kong this September. His works are currently being carried in galleries in Singapore, London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Finland, Belgium and Hanoi.

Lim Khim Katy : Lim Khim Katy
Lim Khim Katy is the child of a Cambodian father and a Vietnamese mother who met during an art class. Katy was born in 1978 in Ho Chi Minh City and graduated from the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Art University in 2001. Despite her relative youth, she was featured in her first solo exhibition in Hanoi in 2005. In her first exhibition outside the country (Bangkok, 2006) every piece sold out – an amazing feat for a young artist.

Since graduation, Katy has received six prizes and certificates of merit for 5 separate paintings. She draws her inspiration from her life experiences and her interaction with others and feels compelled to record her observations on canvas. Her figurative works can be edgy and psychologically powerful with the subjects’ eyes shedding light on their emotional state. Katy's art often reflects hardship, a middle class striving to make life better or misery caused by poverty. Her landscapes are flooded with vibrant color yet remain tranquil and serene. Additional works available - please inquire.

Hong Viet Dung : Hong Viet Dung
Hong Viet Dung was born in 1962 in Hanoi. He graduated with a degree in painting from the Hanoi Industrial College of Fine Arts in 1984. His paintings often depict figures standing in solitude, sometimes holding simple objects. He uses pale and distinctly muted colors to bring a sense of calm to his works.

Dung is a devote Buddhist and conveys his meditations in his paintings. He brings only the essentials into the foreground allowing the observer to use them as a stage for creating his or her own images and reflecting upon them. Dung produces a very limited number of works annually and his works are highly sought. He has exhibited around the world and his works are in the permanent collection of the Vietnam Fine Arts Museum.

"I always paint people and views that surround me. This simple beauty is lyrical. In my paintings, I like to reduce details, according to the Eastern Style."

Phuong Quoc Tri : Phuong Quoc Tri
Phuong Quoc Tri was born in 1976 in central Vietnam in the small town of Phan Rang. He left home at the age of 12 to settle in Saigon where he struggled to earn a living and continue his education. Tri's father and brother were self-taught artists and Tri shared their passion for expressing human emotion on a canvas and through sculptural works. He is one of the most talented self-taught young artists in Vietnam and is a significant talent to watch.

Tri's works are almost exclusively figurative. His main themes include women of the minority tribes, nudes and women in traditional ao dai dresses. Each of his characters tells a story; some of longing, some of hardship, some of a destiny unknown. Tri's works are like classical music - we are forced to think, reflect and experience to come to our own conclusions. His introverted characters appear to be deep in thought; their lives rich with joy and sorrow. Our eyes are drawn to the figures and we can not help but to search for a deeper understanding of what they are thinking; what can we learn from them?

In 2007, Tri was featured in his first very successful solo exhibition "Sympathetic" and his works are currently being shown in galleries in Hanoi, London and Hong Kong.

Pham Hong Son : Pham Hong Son
Pham Hong Son was born in Thai Nguyen Province, attended the Children's School of Fine Art and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 1992. He is a member of the Hanoi and Vietnam Fine Arts Associations. His works have been exhibited in Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bahrain, New York, Washington, DC and Japan and are held in many private collections.

"I started to travel early and extensively. After each journey the impressions that lingered with me were the landscapes of the riverside, the boats that lay still under the baking sun, the slender bridges that faithfully led passengers to their homes over the flooding waters, the delicate and rudimentary houses made of wood and bamboo supported by nothing but skinny poles, women breaking up the earth to prepare for the planting season and fishermen, wielding their graceful nets in search of the ever elusive catch."

"With just a minimum of color, I wish to harmonize myself with the indigenous creatures and people of the land, where black and white seem to carry color, scent, romance and rhythm, with a touch of natural music from the water and wind." Pham Hong Son

Bui Huu Hung : Bui Huu Hung
Bui Huu Hung was born in Hanoi in 1957. He graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 1975 and began his study of traditional lacquer techniques after graduation. In 1986, he established the Nha Son Studio in Hanoi. The studio, located in a traditional wooden house on stilts, is home to a number of young lacquer artists who share the work space while developing their own styles.

Hung's works are varied but center around a common theme of recollection. He believes that new events, impressions and knowledge are built upon life's historical foundations. He strives to preserve the past by blending it with present day elements so that "it does not become reduced to lifeless words without visual detail".

Hung's works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions throughout Asia, Europe and the United States. His works are in the permanent collections of the Orient Museum of Russia, the Singapore Art Museum and the Modern Art Museum in Melbourne. "If a picture is worth a thousand words, Bui Huu Hung's haunting paintings tell a hundred stories." Heritage Magazine, August 1998

Please let me know if you are interested in a work by Bui Huu Hung and I will work with him to select the perfect piece to meet your needs.

The paintings of Mai Anh are, according to Ian Findlay-Brown, Editor/Publisher of Asian Art News, "quietly emotional and determined. In her impressionistic/expressionistic oeuvre she goes her own way, mining her memories and her experience and observing the rituals and concerns of women around her."

Dung (pronounced Dzung) was born in Hanoi, Vietnam in 1943. He is a self taught artist who began working as an illustrator in the Vietnam film industry in 1961. By 1972 he achieved the position of Cartoon Film Director with Vietnam Television.

His brushwork is full of vitality and reveals an optimistic viewpoint. His works are currently being featured in galleries in Australia, the UK, Vietnam and Tokyo. He has been featured in solo exhibitions in Paris, France and Hanoi and his works are widely held in private collections.

Le Minh : Le Minh
Le Minh was born in Hanoi in 1964 and graduated from the Saigon State Movie College in 1992. His works have been featured in several group and solo exhibitions in Vietnam, Japan and Dubai.

His paintings reflect the world as he experiences it - chaos intermingled with empty space, light juxtaposed with dark, vibrant colors tamed by subdued hues. Le Minh's abstract paintings are structured with houses, windows and cities often viewed from different perspectives. His paintings depict hectic, crowded life, glaring tropical sun, bustling night life as well as serene water scenes. Le Minh hopes that viewers of his works can learn from the "murmurings" between the opposite pairs he presents. His works are currently being carried in galleries in Dubai, Tokyo, Finland, Switzerland, The Netherlands and Hanoi.

Le Minh was one of three artists featured in the highly acclaimed "Through Their Eyes" Exhibition at Tokyo's Shinsei Bank Headquarters in November, 2008.

Doan Xuan Tang : Doan Xuan Tang
Doan Xuan Tang was born in 1977 and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Art University in 2001.

Tang's inspiration originates from images forged during his early years. He has been recognized for his ability to capture the unique beauty and strength of women from the indigenous hill tribes. He uses bold colors and broad brush strokes in all areas except the subject's delicate facial features. At times, he obscures or exaggerates their features, never painting a "perfect" beauty, since beauty comes from within.

In 2001, Tang won the Nokia Asia Pacific Award as well as a student exhibition prize from the Vietnam Fine Arts Association. His works are currently being exhibited in Vietnam and Japan and have made their way into private collections around the world.

Doan Xuan Tang

Dinh Quan : Dinh Quan
Dinh Quan was born in 1964 in Haiphong and graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts College in 1990. He primarily paints delicate female figures in a surrealistic style - sometimes sensual, sometimes deconstructed.

Quan's lacquer painting technique differs from other artists who continue to use a more traditional method. Like others, he creates his pieces by using the sap extracted from the lacquer tree (Rhus vernicifera). Most artists apply as many as twenty layers of lacquer over various pigments and other components such as eggshell, mother of pearl, and gold, silver and bronze leaf. Each layer must be sanded and washed before the next layer is applied. Quan starts by coating his board in layers of clay and cloth. He then mixes the lacquer with a variety of pigments and solvents as well as other substances such as gold, silver and epoxy to achieve a distinctive surface texture and to give his paintings a multi-dimensional feeling. The result is a durable and glossy surface.

His work is widely exhibited and collected and is featured in the Singapore Art Museum, Vietnam Fine Arts Museum and the National Art Gallery of Malaysia. Please inquire about new works.

Ngo Hung Cuong : Ngo Hung Cuong
Ngo Hung Cuong graduated from the Hanoi Fine Art University in 2003. His currently featured works capture the beauty and essence of the female figure. He combines elegant and delicate facial features with strong brush strokes, creating music and movement in each painting.

Cuong enjoys painting a wide variety of subjects including children and his paintings often reflect their pure and innocent lives in a world which, for them, is not quite as simple as it may seem. Honors include Nokia Awards in 1999, 2000 and 2001; Student Exhibition awards in 1998 and 2000; and the "Young Eyes" Exhibition award (French Embassy) in 2001.

"When inspiration overwhelmed me, I took to the brush and paint. The vision of Vietnamese girls in traditional long dress is so delicate and charming. I hope to be able to express such elegance on the surface of my canvas." Ngo Hung Cuong

Ngo Hung Cuong

Le Thiet Cuong : Le Thiet Cuong
Le Thiet Cuong was born in 1962 in Hanoi. His father, Le Nguyen, was a well respected film playwright, scriptwriter and poet and his mother, Do Phuong Thao was a famous cinematographer. As a young child, Cuong moved with his family to Binh Da village, where they escaped the American bombing of Hanoi. Cuong attended the Vietnam State Film College from 1985 - 1990 and graduated with a degree in set design and animation.

Cuong began to study Tay Tang Buddhism (a Tibetan sect) after his graduation from college and his devotion to these studies has profoundly influenced his work. Coungs first solo international exhibition was in 1995 and since then, his works have been widely recognized and collected in both private and public collections and are included in the new Southeast Asian art collection at the Singapore National Museum.

"A painting is not a creation of the hand but of the mind. Perhaps, I started to return from a point. I am still at that point to which I did not belong from the beginning." Le Thiet Cuong

Le Thiet Cuong

Tran Quoc Vinh : Tranh Quoc Vinh
Tran Quoc Vinh was born in Haiphong in 1959 and graduated in 1981 from the Higher Music and Art School. Vinh has participated in many exhibitions including Japan, Hong Kong, Australia and England. One particularly interesting exhibition (from my perspective) was in 1990 when he exhibited at the National Fine Art "Propaganda Posters for Children" exhibition organized by the Ministry of Culture and Education.

Vinh's paintings often show women going about their daily lives surrounded by whimsical light and beauty; their faces however, almost always reflect contemplation or melancholy. Sometimes he includes painted eyes on rocks or other objects to quietly convey a sense of being watched. Vinh's style and technique are well refined and exacting and his paintings are widely held in private collections.

Vu Dinh Son : Vu Dinh Son

Son has participated in group and solo exhibitions in Vietnam, New York, Hong Kong and Vancouver, BC and he is represented by galleries in Ho Chi Minh City, New York, Vancouver, Singapore, Hungary and Korea.

We are very pleased to bring Son's thoughtful works to Tokyo. Each painting tells a story that Son is looking forward to sharing with others so that we can better understand him and the culture that he holds dear.

Gleb Netch (Netchvolodov) : Gleb Netchvolodov
Gleb Netchvolodov was born in 1967 in St. Petersburg, Russia. He graduated from Tartu Art College (Estonia) in 1989 with a degree in Graphics. In 1992, he completed his graduate studies at Tartu University and received an M.A. in Art Theory and History.

Gleb has lived and worked in Estonia, the United States, London and Tokyo. In addition to working as a freelance artist, he has illustrated numerous books and is an accomplished graphic designer. He has been featured in five solo exhibitions (Tartu, Copenhagen, Chicago, London and Tokyo) and has participated in group exhibitions throughout Europe and the USA. Much of Glebs works are influenced by his expansive knowledge of world literature and his pieces are often symbolic, utilizing historical texts and symbols as visual elements to develop his themes.

Glebs current collection, "Nihon Symphony" opened at Toriizaka Art on May 22nd. This collection has been inspired by his time in Japan - not changing his techniques but softening his style from what he often terms “grotesque realism”. This collection reflects the peace, tranquility and order of the island that he now calls home. His works have a visual balance between realism and stylization and feature a variety of content, including micro-elements of the culture, artistic and historic environments in Japan.

Diane Rakocy : Diane Rakocy
Diane was raised in a small mid-western town in the United States and started traveling abroad at the age of fourteen. She has lived in Asia, Africa and Europe and her travels, coupled with her deep sense of spirituality, have given her insight into the lives and beliefs of many different cultures. We enjoyed welcoming Diane for her first Tokyo exhibition this year. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the wine and cheese opening on Friday, October 9th.

Like all artists, Diane's paintings reflect where she's been both literally and figuratively. She is best known for her unique ability to combine color and light to create vibrant, luminous figurative paintings. While traveling in Asia, Diane was fascinated by the ancient Buddha statues carved from stone. Many of them were broken and chipped but still wore clear expressions on their faces. Diane's paintings with bright acrylic paint and rich textures, seem to bring new life to the faces of the ancient carvings.

Diane received her undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and two Masters degrees (Business and Education) from Northwestern University. She has studied watercolors under Jim Wisnowski and mandala art under Judith Cornell and has taught at the North Shore Art League Winnetka, IL. Diane currently lives in Tokyo and is the mother of three teenagers.
